Capricorn, Fraser and Sunshine Coasts
Heading south from the Whitsundays along the central Queensland coast brings us to the edge of the tropics, and the aptly named Capricorn Coast through which the Tropic of Capricorn passes. Further south lies the Fraser Coast and the World Heritage listed Fraser Island, and radiant beaches of Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, with the dramatic volcanic plugs of the Glass House Mountains rising inland.
Great Keppel Island is the largest of the 18 islands that make up the Keppel Group. Scintillating white sand beaches line turquoise bays and a stroll through the elevated interior of the island reveals panoramic views all around, including those of Long Beach which stretches along the southern coast of the island. South of the Tropic of Cancer lies Fraser Island, one of Australia’s natural treasures and considered the world’s largest sand island. Listed on the World Heritage Register, it features endless beaches, rainforests, freshwater lakes… and the wreck of the S. S. Maheno beached on the east coast of the island. The Maheno is a unique Fraser icon, as it sits upright quietly contemplating its unexpected resting place. Noosa on the Sunshine Coast is a crowd favorite. With its long, gently curving Main Beach and magnificent views, Noosa Heads is the gateway to the wondrous beaches, walking tracks and striking coastal scenery of Noosa National Park. Heading inland towards Brisbane brings us to the thrilling sky-reaching spectacle of the Glass House Mountains, towering over the rolling Queensland landscape.
